Veteran Bucks Free Press reporter Margaret Smith was given an unexpected ‘surprise surprise’ when she was handed an award by Cilla Black.
Margaret was standing with her notebook at an event celebrating four years of fund raising for the local charity Scannappeal, when her name was called to collect an award for the Newsquest title’s continuous support.
Scannappeal patron Cilla was only too pleased to present the award to the stunned political reporter.
Free Press Editor, Steve Cohen, who was in the audience, said: “I’d been tipped off beforehand that Maggie was going to be called to get the award on our behalf, but I was sworn to secrecy. Her face was a picture when her name was called out.
“She was standing there with her pad taking notes when suddenly she realised that she was the story.
“She was thrilled. And I’m pleased to say this kind of award couldn’t have gone to a more deserving case.”
So far, £750,000 has been raised for two projects at Wycombe Hospital the Sunrise cancer unit and to equip a dedicated scanning unit for women.
