Holdthefrontpage readers have been telling us more about what their publication did to mark the Queen Mother’s death.

The announcement on Saturday came just minutes after the South Wales Evening Post sports edition run ended.

The Swansea paper has a Breaking News print plan for such occasions and within half-an-hour it was put into operation with key editorial and print staff alerted. A number of staff also came in of their own accord after hearing the announcement.

Acting assistant editor Jonathan Isaacs said: “It was decided to go for a 32-page special tribute edition to come out early the following day.

“A team of 12 sub-editors, reporters and scanners began compiling the edition at 7pm and worked until 2.30am the following morning.

“Emergency newspaper sales and press teams were brought in overnight and 20,000 copies started to run off the press at 5.30am with the first papers appearing on the streets at 6am.

“We did not rely solely on PA but got local reaction from Welsh and local political leaders to the news and had exclusive pictures of the Queen Mother’s visits to the local circulation area, Swansea and South West Wales.”

Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, the East Anglian Daily Times and Eastern Daily Press got to work on Sunday to produce extra editorial copy for Monday.

The EADT brought out a 24-page supplement to go alongside 11 pages of coverage in the main paper, while the EDP produced 14 pages of coverage as well as a 16-page supplement, including many pictures of the Queen Mother at the Sandringham estate.

The Norwich Evening News brought out a 16-page supplement to go with its five pages of news coverage in the paper, and also opened up an online book of condolence.
