Students honoured in Gazette backed writing competition

Three students from Basildon College have had their work recognised through a competition backed by the Billericay and Wickford Gazette.

Awards were presented to the students as part of the annual Wickford Talking Newspaper Writing Competition, which is organised by the college and sponsored by the Gazette.

Laura Kruyer, (19), won the poetry category, while Angela Lucas, (66), was highly commended for the overall quality of her work, and Lee Lawler, (26), took the top prize in the short story section and was named the competition’s overall winner.

Bruce Bellringer, from Wickford and District Talking Newspaper, said the competition had been a great success yet again.

He said: “We have been running this competition since 1993 and the quality of entries improves year on year.”

Much of the work entered in this year’s competition will appear in the July edition of the Talking Newspaper’s regular magazine for visually impaired people, and the winning entries will also appear on the website clik.to/thegloob

Gazette assistant editor, Keith Parker, said: “The Gazette prides itself at being at the heart of the community, so it is extremely encouraging to be able to work with Wickford Talking Newspaper and Basildon College to recognise the efforts of local writers.”
