Star joins sister titles at new press

The Evening Star in Ipswich rolled off the presses at Archant’s Thorpe Print Centre near Norwich for the first time this week, in a move which means all four of the group’s daily newspapers are now printed at the centre.

The Evening Star is now being printed at Thorpe on Mondays and Saturdays to allow its Grassroots supplement and Weekend Star publication to benefit from the extra colour available with the new press, taking the morning slot before the Norwich Evening News twice a week.

The Eastern Daily Press and East Anglian Daily Times are also printed at the centre.

Evening Star editor Nigel Pickover said: “This was a huge and complicated operation, involving planning over many months in both Ipswich and Norwich, but day one went like clockwork.

“A new and robust electronic page transfer system helped the product wing its way to Thorpe in seconds and our colleagues in Archant Print, led by Clive Want, couldn’t have been more helpful.

“It’s been a triumph for co-operative working and we hope to be able to take advantage of the extra colour and a high-quality supplement to lift Tuesday sales.”

The Star will continue to be printed at Ipswich from Tuesday to Friday to take advantage of the later off-press times.
