Standard man's book opens up resort's history

Former Skegness Standard editor John Cowpe has written a new book. Skegness Past, a collection of old photographs that so far sat unused in the photographic archive of the newspaper.

Containing more than 150 photographs, the book gives an insight into the development of Skegness, from a fishing village into the diverse place it is today.

Skegness Past is a unique resource that covers events such as the 1953 East Coast floods as well as the visit of Princess Margaret to the town in 1968. Lighter sections of the book include images of the Skegness It’s a Knockout team who entered a competition in 1974 as part of the European Jeux Sans Frontieres event.

Various images taken at the end of the 19th century through to the start of the present century are covered in the collection aimed at inspiring local residents to find out about the history of Skegness.

Skegness Past by John Cowpe is published by Lincolnshire Newspapers, in conjunction with At Heart and is available for £12.99 from the Skegness Standard Newspaper offices.
