Sports editor blows final whistle on his journalism career

Luton Herald&Post sports editor John Oliver has retired after 46 years in journalism.

The 61-year-old was responsible for the paper’s sporting coverage, and also served as a committed charities champion.

He was a founder member of the Herald&Post charity appeals committee which, with his help, has raised more than £320,000 for good causes since 1999.

John first joined the Herald&Post in 1982, and since then has had various roles including sports editor, editor and group editor through various newspaper mergers, which included taking over the Luton News and Dunstable Gazette in 1999.

To mark his retirement John was presented with a specially-produced front page of the Herald&Post.

Herald&Post editor John Francis said: “We all wish John well in his retirement, and Luton’s favourite free paper remains committed to supporting good causes in the community.”
