Snooker stars help celebrate paper's 150th

A chance to see seven of the world’s top snooker players live brought over 1,000 dedicated fans to Trowbridge for the start of the Wiltshire Times’ 150th birthday celebrations.

All five matches of the 2004 Betfair Premier Snooker League, played at the Civic Hall, sold out before the first cue ball was struck.

More than 2,000 tickets had been available for the top class event featuring Jimmy White, Stephen Hendry, John Higgins, Marco Fu, Steve Davis, Mark Williams and UK Masters winner Paul Hunter.

The League was brought to Trowbridge by the Wiltshire Times to mark the paper’s 150th anniversary year.

Editor Toby Granville said: “The snooker weekend was the perfect start to our 150th anniversary celebrations and fantastic for the town of Trowbridge to be recognised as the perfect location for a tournament of this magnitude.

“It was an honour for the Wiltshire Times to be part of this historic event, playing host to seven of the world’s top snooker stars, and now, after its phenomenal success, hopefully our readers can look forward to more events like this in the future.”
