SMG steps up bid for Yorkshire radio licence

Scottish Media Group, publisher of the Glasgow Herald and Glasgow Evening Times, has appointed Beverley Webster to lead Y-Radio, which is competing to win the licence for a new radio station in Yorkshire.

SMG, which owns Virgin Radio, faces competition for the licence from Newsquest, which runs the York Evening Press.

Applications for the new South and West Yorkshire FM licence will be submitted to the Radio Authority in next month.

Beverley said: “Over the last few years, commercial radio in our region has focused on younger audiences, perhaps to the exclusion of people over the age of 35 – so I was excited to hear SMG’s ideas for extending listener choice in Yorkshire.

“Together, we want to change the radio landscape for the better and that challenge appeals to me.”

SMG Radio’s Business Development Director Bobby Hain said: “”We are combining the radio expertise of Virgin Radio, and the vision and resources of SMG plc with the local knowledge and understanding of our non-executive board – it is a perfect match.

“Beverley Webster is a natural leader and her business experience will be invaluable to the development of a successful radio station in Yorkshire.”
