Singing sports editor retires

Staff at the Cornish Guardian have bid a fond farewell to sports editor Dave Henderson, who has retired after 47 years in journalism.

Dave worked his last day at the newspaper on Friday – his 63rd birthday – and after a celebration dinner, he is now looking forward to a life away from the deadlines.

He said: “It feels like the right time to step aside and let someone else have a go.”

Dave has spent his entire career working for Northcliffe Newspapers, of which 44 years have been at the Cornish Guardian, which he first joined in 1956 as a trainee reporter.

In 1963 he moved to the Western Morning News in Plymouth, spending three years a reporter, before returning to the Cornish Guardian. He has been sports editor since 1976.

He said: “The paper is planning to increase its sports coverage and as you get older you don’t want more challenges, you’re looking the other way and starting to wind down.

“I have a lot of other interests and I would rather pursue those.”

One of those interests is music, and Dave currently sings with St Columb Millennium Choir, for which he is chairman.

He is also a member of the Loveny Male Voice Choir, and is soon to feature on a new CD which is due to be recorded live at a forthcoming concert.

He said: “I will miss the paper – it will be a complete change – but I’ll still pop in and see my friends.”

  • The Guardian’s new sports editor is Kevin Marriott, (46), who was previously sports editor at the Plymouth-based Sunday Independent.
