Show of sympathy for rape victim

A 92-year-old rape victim has been cheered by generous readers of the Ipswich Evening Star, who have donated more than £2,000 to aid her recovery.

The woman was attacked and raped earlier this month as she walked home from Sainsburys in the town centre.

The crime sent shockwaves through the region and the Evening Star responded by launching its Show Her You Care appeal to raise cash for the victim.

The paper is also teaming up with Sainsburys to offer a £2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the attacker.

Now donations to the appeal total more than £2,000 and the pensioner has been touched by the response.

She said: “I want to thank everyone for their gifts and kind thoughts. They have helped me to get better and I am on the mend now.

“I hope the man who attacked me will be ashamed of himself. I think he is sick. I can’t say anymore.”

Meanwhile detectives are ploughing through hundreds of hours of CCTV footage in the hope it will help them catch the rapist.
