Safety pins at the ready

Oy! What are you looking at?

Why – it’s that nice young reporter from the Leicester Mercury… but what does she look like?

Her latest assignment from the newsdesk was to walk through the streets of Leicester dressed up in the fashions the experts believe will soon be be making it big again.

Rebecca Jenkins is no shrinking violet. But her new gear took her a little by surprise when she caught sight of her reflection in a shop window.

She told her readers: “Punk is making a comeback and, as I discovered, while wearing a spiky green wig, it will earn the wearer plenty of glances – but not all of them will be admiring ones.”

She hired the costume from costume shop Vintage Years, which supplies wardrobe requirements for fancy dress and the theatre.

Rebecca, 22, told HoldTheFrontPage: “Did I volunteer or was I ‘volunteered’? Well, my job is as a trainee and I’ve only been here six weeks so you can work it out!”

In her short time at the Mercury she’s already sampled motorway service station food, interviewed the 80-year-old who’s just released a dance track on CD and encouraged people to pucker up on National Kissing Day – so the portfolio is growing.

Her latest atricle appeared under the sub-heading Changing from Pretty to Punkette.

“I wasn’t even born when punk happened so it was quite an experience,” she said.

“I didn’t go into work dressed like this but when the article appeared everyone was quite, shall we say, supportive.

“Some of the people in the city centre were shocked by what they saw and one person called me a freak. It was strange to be in a position where people are staring at you and it was a relief to get the gear off afterwards.”
