Retirement for print stalwart

The man in charge of printing the Dumfries and Galloway Standard has decided to call it a day.

John Paterson, who has spent more than 50 years in the print industry, is retiring from his position as works manager for Scottish and Universal Newspapers.

He served an apprenticeship as a compositor for Robert Dinwiddie in Dumfries before joining the Standard in 1960.

By 1972, he had been promoted to the position of foreman compositor.

As well as printing the Standard, John was responsible for its sister paper, the Galloway News.

He became works manager in 1992 and he combined the job with running a Queen of the South souvenir shop.

His position will be filled by Robert Glover, who has worked for the company since 1958.
