Reporter goes under the spotlight in TV talent focus

St Albans Review journalist Alex Barham has appeared in a television documentary – and got the chance to realise her dream of being a magazine journalist.

It was her first television appearance, and the T4 documentary series broadcast as part of the T4 talent weekend also featured other young people aspiring to work in creative industries such as radio and fashion.

Alex, (22), completed a week’s work experience at GQ magazine in October, under the guidance of the magazine’s editor Dylan Jones.

The 15 minute programme, Debutantes, which aired on T4 on Saturday, followed Alex as she attempted to write an article worthy of publication.

The Watford-based journalist has since been told that her article on muscle dysmorphia, a condition that affects highly muscled men who view their body size as small, despite their large build, will be published in the March 2008 edition.

She said: “It was obviously great for me to work for somebody high up in the industry.

“I’ve never done anything like this before, it was a whole new experience and confirmed that magazine journalism would be a great future career, although I’m very happy working where I am at the moment.”

After graduating from university in the summer with a postgraduate degree in journalism, Alex began work as a newspaper reporter for the St Albans Review.

As a former English and drama graduate, her hobbies include teaching English to deprived children and running drama workshops in women’s prisons.
