Refugees hand themselves in at newspaper office

Two Iraqi refugees gave themselves up to police at the head office of the Kent Messenger Group.

The pair, who said they had paid $7,000 each to be brought to England from Turkey by lorry, arrived at Messenger House in Larkfield at 8.30am and asked if they could use the telephone to contact the authorities.

Receptionist Lee Tanner gave the pair 20p for the payphone and health and safety officer, Chris Meader, sat with the pair for an hour until the police arrived.

They claimed to have spent three hours walking along the hard shoulder of the M20 after arriving in England in the early hours of the morning.

Staff at the Kent Messenger Group had seen them walking along the motorway as they drove into work.
