Red card for paper that reported 29-0 win

The Derbyshire Times has been shown the red card by organisers of a junior football league, after the newspaper correctly reported on a big-scoring match.

Sheffield and District Junior Sunday League has banned all of its clubs from contacting the paper to publicise its results following a report on a 29-0 win by Brampton Rovers Under-9s.

League officials took exception to the Derbyshire Times story, which described the result as a “comprehensive trouncing”.

And they said the paper should not have reported on the match at all – because the league doesn’t allow scores over 14 to be published.

Editor Mike Wilson said: “This is political correctness gone mad. The only losers in this are the youngsters.

“Scores are part and parcel of competitive sport, which is exactly what football is.”

The paper says it was previously unaware that a 14-goal limit was in place, but would not agree to the idea.

And the league’s ban means youngsters can no longer read about their football achievements in its pages.

Mike said: “Other leagues we report on don’t impose this 14-goal limit or object to words like trouncing, which literally means a heavy defeat.

“The league request amounts to censorship of the facts – and if teams are losing 29-0 then perhaps this league should be looking at whether or not it is guilty of mis-matches which might certainly put young players off the game rather than our reports.”

  • Parents of some of the junior league’s players have organised a petition which asks that the ban be overturned.
