Record haul for Mail

Money raised by Hull Daily Mail readers to improve community woodland has topped than £25,0000.

The latest boost came after proceeds from the Talent Trail contest were totted up, raising £6,800, which is £1,000 more than last year’s event.

The Mail’s community and campaigns editor, Stan Szecowka, told readers: “This year’s talent trail was the biggest and best yet and we are staggered by the amount raised for Oppy Wood.

“Our readers did us proud by selling out the grand final and supporting all the Talent Trail heats.”

The Mail had teamed up with Clubland Leisure and British Gas to stage the event, which boasted £2,500 prize money.

The singer who romped home in the showcase final is also helping charity – by donating some of the proceeds of his new album to another one of the paper’s fund-raising campaigns.

Martin Jackson is helping the elderly by pledging £1.50 from the sale of each £10 CD to the Mail’s £2.5m Building for the Future campaign. The 23-year-old singer was set on the road to stardom by winning Talent Trail 2000 in front of 1,400 Mail readers at Hull City Hall.

The Mail aims to help raise £2.5m for a new healthy living centre within 18 months to replace “woefully inadequate” existing facilities and meet the needs of disabled and elderly users.
