Record figures for speed camera van story

The Shropshire Star’s website has enjoyed record viewing figures – for an article about a speed camera van allegedly being caught speeding.

The article, which can be seen here was posted on the Shropshire Star.com website on Monday and the figures were revealed yesterday.

More than 14,900 people viewed the story on Monday, with thousands more following suit the day after.

The story reports that the driver of a mobile speed camera van was allegedly clocked by police, breaking the limit on a Shropshire road.

The van operator, who had been on patrol, could face court. If convicted the driver could face a fine, licence points or even a ban.

Shropshire Star Internet editor, Ian Harvey, said: “I was amazed when I arrived at work this morning, checked our site stats and found more than 2,000 had already read the story today, and even more amazed to discover that 14,908 read it yesterday.”

The page views enjoyed a boost from submitting the story to various news aggregation services, including the popular Fark service.
