Fifty-two per cent of weekly titles increased their circulation but aggregate sales were down by 0.6 per cent.
The West Briton Series has the highest circulation – 50,785 copies, 100% of which are actively purchased. Manchester Metro News, which distributes 302,874 copies, is the highest ranking free weekly newspaper.
ABC chief executive Chris Boyd said: In a market where consumers throughout the UK have an ever-growing choice of media, and even greater pressures on their leisure time, it is very heartening to see this performance from the regional press.
The strong performance from the weeklies, in particular, clearly demonstrates that the newspapers are satisfying a growing need for local news, comment and features.”

A recent report The Renaissance of Regional Nations showed almost every major element of our lives happens within a 14-mile radius of our homes and that 48% of people express a strong or moderate need for involvement in the life of their community or neighbourhood.
