Readers strike it lucky with reporter's wife

The wife of a Brighton Evening Argus reporter has been helping readers to win prizes galore thanks to one of the most unusual syndicated features around.

Ruth Galloway writes a column for the Saturday leisure supplement containing tips on winning competitions run by supermarkets and High Street shops.

Her column, called “Lady Luck”, attracts a massive postbag and one reader recently followed Ruth’s tips to win a holiday in America.

Lady Luck is also running on Saturday nights in the Swansea-based South Wales Evening Post, where it has also built up a strong following with a big reader response.

Ruth began entering competitions 12 years ago and has won hundreds of prizes, including cars and holidays in free draws and competitions which require writing a slogan or completing a tiebreaker sentence.

She said: “My best-known slogan is one I penned for a Durex competition which asked entrants to say why the brand of condoms were stylish and fun. I wrote that “they made a great thing inconceivably better” and won a car.

“There are literally hundreds of thousands of competition addicts in Britain just like me, chasing prizes worth an estimated £5 million being given away every month of the year by shops and manufacturers.”

Ruth’s husband, Nigel, has been a staff reporter with The Argus for 21 years, running a district office operation at Chichester in West Sussex.
