Readers raise £550,000

A new cancer unit paid for entirely by readers of the South Wales Evening Post has opened its doors to patients.

The newly-completed £550,000 Cancer Institute was paid for by the paper’s successful Cancer Appeal and the Cancer Fund which followed it.

And Welsh Assembly Health Minister Jane Hutt urged readers to keep sending in donations to help build the third and final part of the project.

She said: “The readers of the Evening Post have consistently shown their support for this centre and it is clear the centre is valued by the people of the area.”

She was joined at the opening by Duncan Carrol, managing director of the Post’s parent company South West Wales Publications.

He said: “The great thing about our fund is that there are no administration costs so every penny will go to the appeal.”

The new facility is based at Swansea’s Singleton Hospital.
