Due to the continual demand of readers, Matlock Mercury editor Don Hale updated his paper’s website twice over the weekend with news of the campaign to free Stephen Downing.

Mr Hale believes Downing has spent 27 years in jail for a murder he didn’t commit.

The case was featured by the Mail on Sunday under the headline Victim ofthe Bakewell Tart and was also featured again on Monday morning (Aug 14) onGMTV.

The newspaper has been inundated with e-mails in support of its front pagestory and campaign to free Stephen Downing.

More than 200 replies had been received by Sunday am with a host of front pagecut-out coupons arriving by the bucket-load.
