Proud history of Star Cup

The Llanelli Star Challenge Cup competition is still going strong – 26 years after it first burst on to the Carmarthenshire football scene.

It was the brainchild of Star sports editor Barrie Thomas and the then secretary of Evans & Williams Sports A.F.C., Mr David Chappel.

This year’s competition was featured in a four-page pull-out supplement in the weekly newspaper which included a full match report of this year’s game – which saw Llanelli Steel beat Bwlch 3-2 – action pictures, full details of all the players, results of all the previous finals and the history of the competition.

The Star has always sponsored the competition by donating a cup for the winning team and covering the cost of individual trophies for players and officials.

The only year when the cup wasn’t held was in 1979 when no local parks had pitches available.

Highest-scoring match was in 1997 when Penyfan United beat Llangennach 27-0.
