Press freedom plea to editors

Regional newspaper editors are being asked to complete a survey on press freedom issues.

The five-question form is being sent out by The Newspaper Society in the run-up to its annual celebration of the regional press industry in Local Newspaper Week, which runs from May 3.

The Society wants editors at more than 1,300 papers to identify the major issues of concern regarding press freedom, and where improvements have come through at a local level.

It examines:

  • Major barriers to freedom to report;
  • Legal and practical changes which have eased the ability to report;
  • Whether Freedom of Information legislation is being taken seriously by local public bodies.

    The survey is available via the Newspaper Society website, enabling anyone to respond.

    The results will be announced in Local Newspaper Week, for which an information pack has now been put together.

    The Society, recognising the remarkable work done by regional newspapers to achieve their current status, has put extra effort into revamping this year’s Local Newspaper Week press packs, playing on regional press advertising and editorial strengths, adopting new themes and building on partnerships to stimulate new ideas and opportunities for making this Local Newspaper Week the most successful yet.

    World Press Freedom Day on May 3 falls at the start of the week, providing an opportunity to inform readers of the crucial role the regional press plays in safeguarding free expression and promoting openness among public bodies in the local community.
