Press Club honours Post veteran Bert

The tables were turned on veteran Birmingham Post cartoonist Bert Hackett when he attended a lunch in his honour at the city’s Burlington Hotel.

Bert – known in-paper as ‘Gemini’ was presented with a specially commissioned cartoon – of himself.

The event was organised by Birmingham Press Club, and he became the first recipient of the organisation’s new tie.

  • Jasper Carrott helps Bert with his new tie as Press Club chairman John Lamb looks on.
  • The 72-year-old has been drawing inspiration from the Post’s own headlines for his work for the past 40 years, and has since drawn more than 11,000 cartoons and illustrations.

Tony Lennox, acting editor of the Post, said: “Gemini’s contribution to The Birmingham Post over the years has been tremendous.

“He has the unerring ability to get under the skin of a story and throw a fresh light on it. Simply, he’s an institution.”

Star guest at the event was comedian Jasper Carrott.

The lunch also celebrated the 140th birthday of the Press Club, which is the oldest in the world.
