Police pics "first" for Mail

The terrifying moment when a raider forced his way into a pensioner’s home was revealed in pictures when the Hull Daily Mail published graphic CCTV footage.

It is the first time that Humberside Police has released video footage of a house burglary to a newspaper.

The pictures were obtained from the police force’s own camera – installed after the same pensioner was burgled four times in as many months last year.

They show how the man burst into the home of the 90-year-old in Hull to steal just a few pound coins. He did not care that she was at home and powerless to stop him.

The victim was one of dozens of burglary victims to have had cameras installed under a new initiative being piloted in the city.

It is already proving a deterrent in stemming raids at city hot-spots.

The Mail agreed not to identify the woman or where she lives for fear of making her an easy target for crooks.

Publishing five pictures of the raid, the paper made the plea: “Do you know this man?”

Editor John Meehan said: “This was a deeply distressing and disturbing incident.

“The series of pictures tells its own story about the real impact of crime.

“In publishing these images we hope to bring the offender to justice and deter others from committing such crimes.”
