Police-media guidelines published

Police guidelines on how they should work with the media are being made public through the Society of Editors.

The Media Guidelines, issued by the Association of Chief Police Officers, were drawn up by the Acpo Media Advisory Group, chaired by Elizabeth Neville, the chief constable of Wiltshire.

The Society of Editors and other media organisations were consulted before the document was released to chief constables.

Society director Bob Satchwell said: “While we still have some concerns about some parts of the guidelines we welcome their publication.

“Editors are encouraged to meet chief constables to discuss their media policies.

“The society is always available to offer advice before meetings.”

It is for the chief constables to decide whether – and how – they should be implemented. Acpo recommends that police chiefs consult with local media and consider adapting the guidelines in the light of local circumstances.

The link to the guidelines is available through the Society of Editors website.
