Plans for £1m news office revamp given go-ahead

A £1m scheme to revamp the South Wales Evening Post’s offices in Swansea has been given the go-ahead by planning officials.

The move will see the recladding of the front of the 1960s building in glass and aluminium, with the sides partially clad in terracotta tiles.

The scheme also includes a glass canopy over the entrance, a ramp for disabled access and a large electronic display panel on the top of the new facade, which could be used for showing information such as time, temperature and breaking news.

Before voting to give the plans the go-ahead, members of Swansea Council’s planning committee toured the Adelaide Street building to see how the plans would impact on the surrounding buildings.

Chris Rees, managing director of South West Wales Publications, said: “This redevelopment plan underlines the company’s commitment to Swansea.

“This part of the city has seen tremendous change for the better in recent years, and we are keen to play our part in making this gateway to Swansea attractive.”

The company says the new look offices have been designed to complement the mix of historic and new buildings in the former docklands area of the city.

Evening Post editor Spencer Feeney said: “The Evening Post is an important part of the fabric of the city, and we are keen to play our part in the improvements that are going on.

“The Post has just been confirmed as Wales’s largest selling newspaper, and our new appearance will reflect our status.”
