Pictures taken by former Derby Evening Telegraph photographer Derek Ryan have been unearthed for a new book – co-written by his daughter.
While sifting through thousands of images held on www.picturethepast.org.uk, Sally Parkin was surprised to discover photographs taken by her father, now 73, who worked for the Derby Evening Telegraph from 1958 to 1981.
And his images are among those included in new book Picture the Past – Derby, put together by Sally and colleague Darren Holden.
Sally said: “I enjoyed compiling pictures for our book.
“It was challenging but very enjoyable, especially as I found pictures my father had taken while working for the Derby Evening Telegraph as a photographer during the 60s, 70s and 80s.
“I knew when I was growing up that my dad was a photographer for the local paper, but I didn’t have much opportunity to see his work. So it was a nice surprise when I realised that some of his pictures were being kept in the Picture the Past archives.
“I think dad was pleased too, when he heard that some of his photographs were preserved for posterity.”
Sally and Darren – who can normally be found manning Northcliffe Electronic Publishing’s Beehive community publishing helpdesk – faced a tremendous challenge sourcing images for the book, a joint venture by NEP, the Picture The Past website and Stroud-based Tempus Publishing.
The book provides a pictorial history of Derby over the last 150 years, and is split into eight chapters each devoted to a specific theme include Victorian cityscapes, people at work, and play and scenes of war and sporting triumph.
Copies are also available online at £12.99 plus £1.50 postage and packing from http://beehive.thisisderbyshire.co.uk/picturethepast
