Success for Northern Echo photographer

A photographer with The Northern Echo is celebrating his success in one ofthe country’s most-prestigious competitions.

Stuart Boulton was named runner-up in the arts and entertainment category of the Nikon Press Photography of the Year competition.

He was the only photographer with a regional paper shortlisted for thecategory, the rest coming from Fleet Street and news agencies.

Judges were impressed by Stuart’s portfolio, which included a photograph ofpop star heartthrob Ronan Keating at a Teesside radio studio and streetentertainers at Stockton International Riverside Festival.

As runner-up, he was awarded £50 and his photographs will feature in a bookmarking the 2001 Nikon awards.

Stuart, who has won a string of prestigious awards over the last couple ofyears, said: “Coming runner-up in this is better than winning a regionalaward because you are competing against famous photographers working for thenational newspapers.

“I am really pleased to win, not only for myself but for The Northern Echoas well.”

Northern Echo editor Peter Barron said: “This really is a huge achievement because Stuart was up against the best the industry has to offer and came close to winning.”
