A photo archive is offering more than 100,000 photos for sale through the Internet.

The initiative, from the Shropshire Star, has proved a hit since it went live in June.

The aim of shropshirestarpix.com was to make most of the pictures taken by Shropshire Star photographers available for people to search through at leisure – and buy instantly should they wish.

Visitors to the site can browse thumbnail photos found by their search and zoom in on an image to see a larger version, together with the original caption that appeared in the paper.

The idea behind the set-up is that by allowing people to browse, they will buy more pictures. The search engine finds pictures from the past, surrounding the same person or subject, and often gives a better choice than the simply having the photo that appeared in the paper.

Each 10×6 image sells for £7.50, including postage. The largest single order so far is one for £300 – for a collection of images of the floods that hit Shropshire and Mid Wales in November 2000.

All the pictures on site are copyright of the paper, not other firms or individuals, and they are held on a database designed in-house.
