Snapper prepares for cross-country charity challenge

Press snapper Doug Jackson is preparing to take part in an epic trip across Great Britain – travelling from John O’Groats to Land’s End on a moped.

The Whitby Gazette photographer is planning to join a team of six on the charity trip in June, with the hope of raising thousands of pounds for Leukaemia Cancer Research and Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Doug said: “Working as a press photographer for a local paper, I get to see some inspirational things which lead to the strangest notions.

“After meeting a gentleman who rode the whole of the Cleveland Way (long distance walk) on his electric scooter I thought what a marvellous scheme it would be to get myself and six or seven friends together and do John O’Groats to Land’s End on mopeds!”

But before Doug can take part, he needs to tackle one minor detail – transport. The team have chosen to go the distance on Honda C90s, and Doug is hoping someone somewhere may have one – or some spare parts – that they can donate or sell to him for a small fee.

He said: “They are one of the most popular motorcycles in the world and the kind of thing that people inherit. They are notoriously awful and we chose them for the sheer novelty.”

The team are also considering dressing up in costume for the trip, and estimate it will take eight days to complete it.

Doug said: “We’ll be in the saddle for seven or eight hours on the first day and that will gradually get less and less as we go through towns shaking collection buckets.

“It should be quite a spectacle.”
