Picture perfect photographers celebrate at Picture Editors' Awards

The Yorkshire Post, The Herald and Evening Times in Glasgow and the Oxford Mail were among the winners at last night’s Picture Editors’ Awards.

Photographers from the regional and national press and agencies gathered at the Guildhall in London for the culmination of the competition, which is now in its 12th year.

The Herald, and The Herald Magazine won the Getty Images Regioal Newspaper and Newspaper Magazine titles, two of ten Awards to head north of the border to Scotland.

Meanwhile Simon Hulme of the Yorkshire Post received the Getty Images Regional Photographer of the Year Award, and Kieran Dodds of the Evening Times was awarded the Diageo Young Photographer of the Year prize.

Simon de Trey-White, who works for the Watford Observer, St.Albans Observer and Harrow Times, was named Nikon Photographer of the Year – Local Newspapers, and Yuri George Anderegg from the Oxford Mail and Oxford Times picked up the Guinness Black and White Photographer of the Year title.

This year’s BG Group Student of the Year was Clara Molden from Norton College in Sheffield.

Winners were presented with their prizes by Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown.

In his opening speech, he told the 600-strong audience: “It is through your eyes, your pictures, your images that we see the world – and we take that for granted day in, day out.

“So what I want to say is that without you, news and newspapers would not only be far duller – but far less effective in what they do. That is why it is both an honour and a humbling experience to present the Awards.”

The Picture Editors’ Awards recognise and reward the very best in photographic journalism throughout the UK and Ireland; the winners are chosen by a ballot of picture editors across the British Isles. More than 1,400 individual entries, almost 9,000 images, were submitted this year.
