Photographers in the frame for awards

Several regional press photographers are among those in the running for an award at this year’s Picture Editors’ Awards.

They will battle it out with agency snappers, freelances and staffers from the nationals for a host of top gongs, which will be presented at ceremony at the Guildhall in London on Monday, May 12.

And following the announcement of the nominees, picture editors will now begin voting to decide who should win.

Those included on the shortlist, are Ben Birchall, of the Bristol Evening Post, who is nominated in both The Getty Images Regional Photographer of the Year category, and for The Nikon Photo Essay Award.

Joining Ben in the Regional Photographer of the Year category is Dave Charnley, from the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette, Jason Roberts of the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo, and Ian Rutherford from The Scotsman.

Meanwhile in The Fujifilm Photographer of the Year category for local newspapers, Jason Thomas Allen from Gazette Newspapers in Basingstoke, Stuart Emmerson from the Harrow Observer, Archant photographer Simon Finlay and Jim Moran from Yorkshire Post Newspapers will compete for the title.

In addition to these awards, entries are now being invited for the Getty Images Newspaper of the Year, Getty Images Regional Newspaper of the Year, and Getty Images Newspaper Magazine of the Year Awards. Titles will be judged on their use of pictures.

  • Last year the Picture Editors’ Awards merged with the Nikon Press Awards, with Nikon UK joining sponsors Fujifilm, Getty Images, the Corporation of London, Diageo and CETA Imaging in providing financial and other support.
