Newscast takes on second snapper in college training link

Photographic agency Newscast has taken on its second young staffer from Norton College in Sheffield as part of its innovative Academy of Excellence.

Jason Alden, (24), graduates in press photography from the college’s NCTJ course this month – but he has already secured a year’s on-the-job training with Newscast.

He said: “This is a brilliant opportunity to learn what it’s like at the sharp end and gain unbeatable real life experience. I’m looking forward to proving myself.”

The college’s training link with Newscast was launched last year to promote new talent, and it is the first of its kind in the industry.

Every year course leader Paul Delmar chooses the best students, who are then given the chance to win a full-time placement with the agency.

Hopefuls are judged by former Guardian picture desk veteran Eamonn McCabe, Newscast’s creative director, and Stewart Goldstein, managing director and founder.

Last year David Parry, (22), was the first recruit to be picked. Since then he has completed a number of high profile projects for the firm – including an eight-week tour to record the launch of the new BMW 3 Series across the US.

Stewart said: “We believe in nurturing talented photographers and helping them to get a foot on the ladder.

“David has gone beyond what he thought was possible in such a short space of time, and we think Jason will follow in his footsteps.”

Paul Delmar added: “This is the only scheme of its kind and our graduates benefit enormously from its success. Long may it continue.”
