New supplement puts readers in the picture

The Derby Evening Telegraph is putting its readers in the picture – with the relaunch of a photographic supplement which was last published in the 1960s.

The first edition of the new Picture Telegraph is due to hit the streets on Saturday, and it will then be published weekly – giving the Evening Telegraph a platform to publish photographs which haven’t made the main paper.

The 32-page supplement will be sold separately at a cost of 30p, and will aim to be a social diary for the people of Derbyshire.

Editor Mike Norton said: “We’ve decided to bring the supplement back because we take a lot of photographs at different events but often don’t have the opportunity to use all of them.

“We want it to be a pictorial record of Derbyshire’s week.”

As well as news pictures, the supplement will include photographs from events such as weddings, dinners and balls, which may not always have previously been covered by the paper.

Evening Telegraph photographers will be visiting the maternity ward at Derby City Hospital to grab pictures of all the new arrivals, and the camera will be turned on the fans at Derby County football matches.

There will also be room for readers to send in their own photographs.

Sub-editor Shelley Baker, a former photographer, has been working on the launch and will discuss with the photographers what should be included each week.

She said: “I will be laying out the pages and it will be a joint decision with the picture desk as to what goes in.

“The photographers are being encouraged to spend more time on jobs and freelance photographers are being used to help cover events.”
