Echo photographers scoop awards

Photographs from the Gloucestershire Echo won four award categories – and were runner-up in three – in the annual Geoff Benger Memorial Awards.

The competition, which is open to photographers throughout the county of Gloucester, is organised by a different newspaper each year.

This year it was the Echo’s turn to organise it.

One of the winners, Mikal Ludlow, said: “It isn’t a fix! Honestly! The judging was by John James, Chief Photographer of the Birmingham Post.”

The awards commemmorate the life and work of regional press photographer Geoff Benger who died suddenly and tragically in 1994 at the age of 55.

Born in Bristol, Geoff spent most of his working life covering news and sport in Gloucestershire.

He began his career as a copy boy in Bristol, intending o become a news reporter, but decided to become a photographer instead.

At the time of his death, Geoff had just completed 40 years with the Western Daily Press and its associated newspapers.
