60ft mast climb as daredevil press man seeks best photo

It’s all in a days work for a regional press photographer – first you are locked up with hardened criminals in the local prison and then you find yourself up a 60ft mast taking pictures of a tall ship.

And that was only part of one busy day for South Wales Evening Post photographer Adrian White’s last week.

Of course, one of the best things about working on newspapers is that you never know what the day will bring.

In the morning Adrian found himself inside Swansea Prison with reporter Jason Evans to report on overcrowding.

In the afternoon he covered a visit of the training ship Stavros S Niarchos which was visiting Swansea.

There was really only one option for a front page picture: to climb the rigging to get a picture of local volunteer Steve Byrne at work on the sails.

  • Adrian at the top of the right hand mast
  • Adrian, (37), said: “It was the best option for the front page picture that the picture editor wanted so with the help of the crew I climbed the mast – it was a little bit hairy because I could only use a safety harness for the bottom of the climb.

“Once I got to the top the boat was swaying from side to side and it was quite difficult holding onto the boat with one hand and taking pictures with the other.

“The end result was well worth it.”

  • Back on firm ground having climbed to the top of the foremast to photograph the tall ship Stavros S Niarchos berthed in the Prince of Wales Dock, Swansea.
  • Like the true professional he is, Adrian also took some file pictures of the development work going on at the new SA1 development from his unusual viewpoint.

His picture made the front page of the South Wales Evening Post as well as getting a show inside.
