Paul gets put through his paces

A former Bath Chronicle journalist is finding the world of public relations a real challenge – just as tough as his old career in newspapers.

Paul Mullins joined Bristol-based agency Strategy PR in April after eight years in journalism, including three-and-a-half years at Bath.

On a recent assignment in his new role he was put through his paces on a weekend in the Brecon Beacons with the Wessex Reserve Forces and Cadets, which the agency has been working with.

Joining 60 middle and junior executives from organisations across the region, Paul took part in Exercise Executive Stretch, a series of physical and mental challenges, which included pushing a 1.2 ton artillery gun up a hill and abseiling down a building.

The exercise is designed to demonstrate the value of military training in leadership and teamwork.

Paul said: “We were woken at 5.30am by a loud explosion as the ‘enemy’ attacked.

“I have never seen people get out of their sleeping bags so quickly.

“This was one of my first big PR assignments and much tougher than anything I did during my eight years in newspaper journalism.”

Paul began his journalism career as a trainee reporter on the Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard.

He later moved to the Wells Journal before joining the Bath Chronicle as a business reporter, later becoming assistant news editor.
