Parliamentary praise for Guardian

The Sutton Guardian has recieved parliamentary praise on its 25th anniversary.

Borough MPs Paul Burstow and Tom Brake tabled an early day motion in support of the paper’s achievements, and heaped praised on the Newsquest-owned title’s fundraising initiatives and successful campaigns over the last quarter of a century.

The motion congratulated the Sutton Guardian on its high standard of local reporting and highlighted the Guardian Angels campaign to raise money for St Raphael’s Hospice and the Community Trust appeal in aid of George Mutter, a young spinal muscular atrophy sufferer.

Other successes included campaigns to:

  • save Sutton Magistrates’ Court;
  • win recognition for Suez canal veterans; and
  • Proud to be Cheam – to save Cheam as a postal address.

    The motion also commended the Sutton Guardian for consistently drawing attention to local charities and fundraising events.

    Paul said: “I wanted to congratulate the Sutton Guardian on its 25th anniversary and this seemed an excellent way of doing that.

    “The campaigns the paper has run and supported have raised huge sums for good causes and made real changes to aspects of local life.

    “I have been particularly pleased to be able to work with staff at the Guardian over important campaigns such as getting recognition for our Suez veterans and for Cheam the support of the paper has been invaluable.

    “I wish them many more years of successful reporting in Sutton.”

  • The Sutton Guardian was launched on a tight budget and staff did not even have a proper office for the first few editions, but it is now the most profitable newspaper in the South London Newspapers group.

    As part of its celebrations the paper published an eight-page supplement which proved popular with readers – and one even baked staff an ananniversary cake.

    The paper is also aiming to raise £52k for the neo-natal unit at St Helier Hospital in Sutton.
