Paper's war memories book raises Poppy Appeal cash

The Worcester News has raised more than £2,000 for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal after putting together a book to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

World War II – An Account Of Local Stories featured the memories of ordinary people in Worcestershire who lived through an extraordinary time, and copies were sold through the Worcester News’ offices and retailer network.

Worcester News editor Stewart Gilbert has now presented a cheque for £2,225 to county poppy co-ordinator Ken Hannon and Royal British Legion county chairman Ken Draper (pictured).

Stewart said: “This proved to be a wonderful publication to produce.

“As well as the factual element relating to the Second World War, it was fascinating to realise that there were so many Worcester News readers who still had such vivid memories of this period of history.

“We were pleased to be able to utilise the offices of the Worcestershire Royal British Legion to help us with the production of this book.

“The contribution from the cover price, will be put to good use via the RBL Poppy Appeal.”
