Page 3 girls create a stir in Lowestoft

The Lowestoft Journal has been brightening up summer for its readers with a series of ‘Page 3 girls’ to promote a charity calendar.

Each week the paper is featuring pictures of daring women who have stripped down to the bare essentials in a bid to raise money for the Ellie Savage Memorial Trust.

The ‘Page 3 girls’ are all featured in the 2005 Golden Girls Calendar which is now on sale, and proceeds will be donated to the charity which supports brain tumour research and young sufferers.

Journal editor Russell Cook said: “Two women in Lowestoft had the idea for the calendar and we joined forces with them.

“We’ve had one girl featured every week and the reaction has been really positive. Local dignitary Lord Somerleyton even congratulated the women for daring to pose for the calendar!

“We’ve had 5,000 calendars printed and we are selling them for £5 each. The production costs have almost been paid for by sponsorship from local companies so everything on top of that is clear profit for the charity.

“The link we have with the girls has been brilliant and it’s created quite a stir in the town.

“And it’s all been done in the best possible taste.”

Although none of the Journal’s staff feature in the calendar, they did team up with girls to promote the calendar at the town’s carnival procession.

The girls featured on the Journal’s float while chief reporter Terry Reeve, his wife Penny, and editorial assistant Rhonda Deal walked the route with collection buckets for a different hospital charity which was being supported by the carnival.

Russell paid tribute to Rhonda for helping to organise the float. He said: “She has been brilliant helping to get things organised and spent a lot of her own time making sure everything went smoothly.”
