Online textbook taken on worldwide

A textbook for Internet journalism has taken off across the online world – and is a course textbook for college and university journalism departments across the UK, US and Australia.

Journalism Online, by University of Central Lancashire’s Mike Ward, unravels the mysteries of writing for the Internet and can be used with the website www.journalismonline.co.uk.

Both the book and the website are receiving worldwide acclaim, having been reviewed or mentioned on Danish, Brazilian, Portuguese and German websites with a review expected from India later this month.

Journalism Online takes the best of the ‘new’ and ‘old’ media to provide an “essential primer” for the emerging discipline. It also provides a useful insight for non-news organisations into how to prepare and present effective web content and avoid the deepest pitfall of the online world – being ignored.

Readers and students can learn about:

  • core journalism skills of identifying, collecting, selecting and presenting news and information;
  • multimedia techniques such as audio recording and editing;
  • online research methods including use of search tools and newsgroups;
  • story construction and writing for the Web;
  • an introduction to HTML;
  • website design for the effective use of content.

    The author, Mike Ward, has taught journalism for 15 years in Preston, Lancs, and is a former BBC and newspaper journalist.

    He was course leader on one of the UK’s first Masters programmes in Online Journalism, specialising in the application of core journalism skills and principles to online content creation. He led the team that developed the UK’s first full journalism degree.

    Mike also advises the UK’s Broadcast Journalism Training Council on online journalism practice and education issues.
