Old news gives an insight

A collection of old newspapers has given a fascinating insight into life in bygone Newcastle.

The Newcastle Evening Chronicle told how the old daily Chronicles were found while a former pub in Sunderland was being renovated in a £1.4m project.

The editions which were discovered were Newcastle Daily Chronicles dated May 14, May 22 and May 27, 1891.

The 109-year-old newspapers offered unusual advice and help for readers.

One advert gives a “perfect cure” for drunkenness, offering Dr Haines Golden Specific, while a letter to the editor in the May 22 edition complains about “reckless cycling”.

Renovation project co-ordinator Liz Hughes is now appealing to Chronicle readers who have old photos of the former pub where they were found to contact her.
