Observer probe prompts police action

An investigation by a West Midlands weekly has resulted in an action plan to fight racist graffiti.

Police and public transport chiefs have got together after the Sutton Coldfield Observer revealed a rise in activity by members of the National Front.

The Observer’s inquiry revealed the findings “more serious” than the usual graffiti, according to the racial attacks monitoring unit.

Maxie Hayles, from the unit, said: “The authorities have a real task on their hands.”

One result of the trend was an increase in racist graffiti on local buses, and the public transport being littered with campaign and recruitment leaflets for the organisation.

The Observer reported how the leaflets skinhead protesters marching against an organised gay rights march in Manchester and boasted how a number of parliamentary seats would be contested by the National Front at the next election.

Sickening leaflets also called for deportation of some ethnic groups, a call to halt immigration and an attack on worshipping rights for Sikhs and Muslims.

The police are now joining forces with bus operator Travel West Midlands to adopt a proactive approach and combat the problem at source – by tracing the leaflet printers.
