NUJ agreement for Cambridge journalists

An agreement has been reached between the Cambridge Evening News and the NUJ for union recognition at the paper.

The move follows months of negotiations between editor Colin Grant and Jeremy Dear, the NUJ’s national organiser.

The agreement will give union members the right to negotiate and represent on all matters relating to journalists’ employment.

Mr Grant said: “Some of our employees, who are members of the NUJ, asked if they could be collectively represented.

“Once we had made it clear there would be no distinction between union and non-union staff and this had been accepted by the NUJ, we saw no reason not to reach a voluntary agreement.”

Mr Dear said: “We have worked with the company to build a new relationship which we hope will mean better terms and conditions for journalists as part of a more successful newspaper.”

The NUJ has now achieved recognition at 14 companies and is in negotiation with a further 30.

A ballot was recently held at Newsquest (Wiltshire) following a presentation to journalists.

Staff from newspapers including the Swindon Evening Advertiser, Wiltshire Times and the Bath Star voted in favour of NUJ recognition at the company.

Fifty-seven journalists voted for recognition, two opposed and a further 12 abstained.
