North Devon kids have a Grand Day Out

Children from farming families in North Devon have enjoyed a ‘Grand Day Out’ thanks to the Journal, to help them recover from their suffering during the foot and mouth crisis.

During the crisis many young people in the area showed tremendous maturity, despite being profoundly affected by their experiences.

Many children had to stay inside their houses during the Easter holidays because outside 1,500 animals were being slaughtered.

So to help youngsters forget their troubles the newspaper joined forces with The Big Sheep animal centre and Let’s Go Superbowl ten-pin bowling alley to give them the ‘Grand Day Out’.

Children were split into two parties and could choose between visiting the animals at The Big Sheep, playing in the indoor play area and watching a show, or spending the day bowling and playing pool.

Journal managing editor Andy Cooper said: “The foot and mouth crisis has had a devasting effect on many families throughout North Devon and I am absolutely delighted we were able to help bring a little fun into the lives of so many youngsters.”
