News in brief

A weekly round-up of how regional newspapers are helping their community…

  • Building work is ready to begin on the Donna Louise Trust children’s hospice less than two years after a £5m appeal was launched in the Stoke Sentinel.
The fund total now tops £3.3m, and construction is planned to begin in the next few weeks.

  • A brave teenager with cerebal palsy who touched the hearts of Brentwood Gazette readers will soon be enjoying greater freedom.
Katie Matthews has little control over the muscles in her body and is confined to a wheelchair.
Campaigners have raised £22,000 after her plight was featured in the paper, and the money will be used to buy her a specially adapted vehicle.

  • New medical equipment, which will help hundreds of children suffering from severe epilepsy, has been presented to doctors thanks to the Yorkshire Post’s successful Healthy Horizons campaign.
The appeal, which the newspaper launched with Leeds Teaching Hospitals Community Chest last September, helped raise £70,000 for a video telemetry EEG system at Leeds General Infirmary.
The equipment will bring welcome relief to hundreds of children across the region who have severe epilepsy.

  • Hundreds of people have stepped out for charity along Bournemouth seafront for the Daily Echo-backed Save the Children Strollerthon.
More than 300 sure-footed fundraisers took part, choosing to walk a variety of distances which ranged from six miles for the fit and eager, to 1.5 miles for the young and not-so-energetic.
It is hoped the money raised by the event will top last year’s total of £3,000.

  • The Lincolnshire Echo-backed St Barnabas Hospice Day Care Centre Appeal has topped the £200,000 mark – leaving just £50,000 to raise.
St Barnabas needs £250,000 to complete the new £1m day care and education centre in Lincoln.
The building itself is already complete but it needs to be equipped with medical equipment and recreation facilities before it opens in the autumn.
