Press Association photographer Edmond Terakopian’s iconic picture of a survivor walking away from the Edgware Road bombing on July 7 – still wearing his jacket and tie and clutching his newspaper – which made front pages around the world, has won third prize in the Single Picture Spot News category in the prestigious World Press Photo contest. He is a former Harrow Observer and Wembley Observer snapper.
Mohamed Azakir, of Reuters scooped first in the section and Chris Hondros (Getty Images) was second. World Press Photo of the Year was named as Finbarr O’Reilly, of Reuters in Canada.


Around 50 friends and colleagues joined Edwin Boorman for a retirement lunch at the Café Royal in London, where Newspaper Society president Sir Nicholas Hewitt paid tribute to Edwin’s service to the regional newspaper industry.
Sir Ray Tindle, gave a special speech in honour of Edwin’s achievements in building up the Kent Messenger business, which boasts newspaper titles, radio stations and internet sites reaching more than a million readers and 150,000 radio listeners. Edwin retired as chairman of the Kent Messenger Group at the end of 2005.


Western Newspapers MD Andrew Calvert has been appointed to a charity’s board of trustees.
His role as chairman of Quartet means that he will take a key role in deciding where to make grants to groups in the Bath and North East Somerset area.


The Newspaper Society has submitted evidence to the Culture, Media and Sport parliamentary committee’s inquiry into the challenges and opportunities for creative industries from the development of new media platforms.
Unauthorised reproduction of material, multi-media portfolio development and freedom of expression legislation will all be looked at.


The RSPCA has reached the £100,000 milestone in its Monty’s Magic Million appeal through the Sheffield Star, with a cheque from parent company Johnston Press bringing up the landmark figure.
The Star is backing the appeal to raise £1m for a state-of-the-art new animal shelter.
