Sports picture agency EMPICS used its real-time photography system to give exclusive behind-the-scenes and in-studio coverage of the inaugural MasterCard FIFPro World XI Player Awards in London.
EMPICS photographers provided live coverage from the event with the ShootLive system, which delivered pictures from the BBC studios to the EMPICS operations centre in less than 20 seconds from camera click. Images were edited there using the system and were available for use on mobile phones and websites a minute after the event.


The Newspaper Press Fund’s West Midlands District has held its annual race night at the Hall Green greyhound stadium.
This year’s event was the 27th consecutive year, with cash raised – around £3,000 – going to NPF: The Journalists’ Charity.


The sixth World Young Reader Conference has challenged the contention that children don’t read and showed what the world’s most innovative newspapers are doing to capture their loyalty.
The conference provided dozens of examples of what newspapers are doing to capture the interest of the young, and challenged the conventional wisdom that young people are exclusively loyal to electronic media.


Reality TV star Fran Cosgrove has handed £1,400 of his own money to the Basildon Echo’s Vickie appeal, which aims to raise enough cash to give 14-year-old cerebral palsy sufferer Vickie Bristow the chance to walk.
Fran was the special guest at a two-night fundraiser which contributed to the £8,000 appeal target.


The Archant London group circulation team took the “Roll Back” of the Gravesend Reporter cover price to 15p one step further and renamed it the “Rock and Roll back”.
To help the promotion go with a swing, they held an “Elvis” themed day in the town centre – and a branded Archant bus was driven round town by ‘Elvis’ with a megaphone promoting the price cut.
