A new Superman story written by John Cleese, where the superhero grows up in Cleese’s home town of Weston-super-Mare rather than Smallville, raises the idea that the character may have worked on the Weston and Somerset Mercury… instead of the Daily Planet.
The Mercury has run a sneak preview of the new DC Comics book, which has a scene with Superman’s father asking him: “Why don’t you just come back here and get a part-time job with the Weston-super-Mare Mercury?”


Yorkshire Post Newspapers has hosted a visit from institutional investors on behalf of parent company Johnston Press.
The visit was to explain in detail the operations of a local newspaper group and help the guests understand how group initiatives are put in place at an operational level.


Former Jersey Evening Post journalist Suzi Austin has joined media training and public relations firm Direct Input Associates.
She was deputy news editor and then political correspondent at the Post before setting up a lifestyle magazine and then moving on to PR at HSBC.


Rural recovery co-ordinator Lord Haskins will be the guest of honour at a Newspaper Conference lunch on January 20.
The lunch will be held in Westminster, and attended by political journalists from the regional press.


A line-up of 14 teams are set to do battle in the annual Archant Awards five-a-side football tournament run by the publisher.
Last year’s winners from the Ham & High are back to defend their title, as are runners-up Hertchester United.
